25-Year Asphalt Shingles: Lifespan vs. Warranty Reality Check

If you look around your neighborhood, there is a good chance that you’ll notice every house outfitted with asphalt shingles roofing. Although metal roofing is gradually gaining popularity and wood shakes are offering an astounding change of pace, but when it comes to blending a host of essential features and properties of a roof that best suits a homeowner, then there isn’t a better option than asphalt shingles.

From affordability to versatility and ease of installation, asphalt shingles gain the maximum marks in all aspects of roofing. You will not be surprised to know that composition shingles can be installed throughout the year as long as your roofer is willing to do so. However, prior to settling for asphalt shingles for your residential roof, it is better to dig a little deeper and understand some basic types of composition shingles available in the marketplace.

When it comes to Material Composition, there are 2 basic types of asphalt shingles:

1.     Fiberglass

Fiberglass asphalt shingles are composed of the following layers: woven fiberglass mat, a waterproof asphalt coating and the upper layer consisting of ceramic granules. This uppermost layer prevents the roof from being damaged by the devastating UV rays. Since this kind of shingle has a lesser amount of asphalt, it is lighter in weight, fire resistant and more durable.

2.     Organic

Manufactured from the recycled layers of felt paper, these are the original kind of asphalt shingles that are drenched in asphalt. The shingles are then encrusted with adhesive asphalt and embedded with ceramic granules for added protection. As much as 40% more asphalt goes into the manufacturing of organic shingles relative to fiberglass, which makes them costlier, heavier, and more harmful.

Furthermore, when it comes to Designing or Manufacturing Processes, there are 3 basic kinds of asphalt shingles that can be fiberglass or organic:

3.     Strip Shingles

Strip shingles are also commonly known as ‘three tab’. They are made up of a single layer of material along with two cuts on the exposed side of the surface. As a result, you get a three tab, slate like look on your roof.

4.     Laminated Shingles

Laminated shingles are more commonly known as ‘architectural shingles’. This is because they contain a second set of shingles on top of the first set to create a unique 3D effect; technically, this also adds some level of resistance. Today, these are the most popular kind of shingles and are also the highest selling ones. Laminated shingles come in a wide variety and can be customized to have a slight resemblance with wood or heavy slate.

5.     Large Form Shingles

A simple form of asphalt shingles, large form shingles are either rectangular or horizontal in shape without any cutouts or tabs.
